Forum Presentation 5-14-10

2010 April 28
by Ben Achtenberg

For our Boston-area Supporters…

For our friends and supporters in the Boston area: I’ll be making a presentation on The Refuge Media Project, and showing some clips from our forthcoming documentary, at the Jamaica Plain Forum on Friday evening, May 14, 2010 from 7:00 to 9:00pm. It will be great if you can join us. The Forum will be at the First Church in Jamaica Plain at 6 Eliot Street,Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 (see map).

The program, entitled Addressing Torture at Home and Abroad: Fighting to Preserve Human Dignity, will also feature my friend, Brinton Lykes, talking about her work in Guatemala and across borders. Brinton is a community cultural psychologist on the faculty of Boston College, and is the Associate Director of BC’s Center for Human Rights and International Justice. She’s one of the founders of the Ignacio Martín-Baró Fund for Mental Health and Human Rights, which supports grassroots human rights projects throughout the world. I’m a long-time member the MBF’s Executive Committee, and managed its online petition campaign pressing the American Psychological Association to take a stronger stand against the involvement of psychologists in abusive interrogations.

For those not familiar with this area, Jamaica Plain is a vibrant and politically active neighborhood of Boston. The Jamaica Plain Forum has been an extraordinarily successful effort to facilitate community discussion on a variety of local, national and international issues through film screenings, speakers, and other events. Its founders are hoping to turn it into a national movement, offering guidance and resources to communities everywhere through its Forum Organizing Project.
